The Muni Update
The Muni Update
Mar 9, 2025
Good Morning,
This past week we had some very much needed precipitation at The Muni. There was several inches of snow and roughly 3/4 of an inch of rainfall totalled on two different days. The rainfall soaked into the ground pretty quickly and provided much needed moisture for the golf course. We removed a couple small plugs from #18 green prior to the rain on Tuesday to monitor for growing conditions in the warm clubhouse setting. They are starting to produce some new grass which is also a welcome sight.
Frost levels were measured as much as four feet in the Spencer area after a wide open Winter season. Saturday morning I was only able to probe to a depth of 1.5 inches on the practice green. The frost level needs to drop significantly to prevent any damage to the turf from foot and golf cart traffic. Premature traffic on the golf greens could result in a significant amount of damage from foot printing that leaves depressions in the surface with each step. I will continue to monitor these conditions so we can open the driving range and golf course in a timely manner. Please be patient and stay off the golf course until we are open.
I dropped off our golf flags with Tailored Graphics this past week to have a heat transfer of our logo added to each flag. We will also have some logo flags available for purchase in the clubhouse once they are completed. They should be a nice addition to the golf course this season.
The new motors, for the pumphouse, arrived on Friday. This 700 pound motor will be mounted on top of the 75 HP turbine in the near future. Pixler Electric will be on site Tuesday to start the electrical work in the pumphouse. Dakota Pump will be on site later in the month to mount the motor and tie up a few other loose ends. Bob Connelly, our irrigation consultant, will be on site to complete all the programming once Dakota Pump is finished. Lastly, we will open the irrigation system for the 2025 season.
Last Spring we completed an irrigation renovation on the golf course greens and surrounds. In the fall we completed a large amount of irrigation repairs to a system that is 25 years old. Adding in the current pumphouse project will equal an irrigation system that allows us to use water in a much more efficient process. There will still be irrigation issues that require repairs or adjustments but it is to be expected with the age of the system.
I have been working with Park Director, Bob Fullhart, to design new landscaping plans across the golf course. The first phase of this plan will be to remove the existing plant materials, rocks, and weed barrier in the existing beds. We will also remove part of the landscaping blocks on each tee box. Later in the season new plant materials will be added to provide a variety of colors that last throughout the golf season. It will be a time consuming project but will give us a high quality landscaping upgrade once completed.
The warmer forecasted temperatures will eliminate the snow cover in the next couple of days. This will provide additional moisture on the greens and the rest of the golf course. Hopefully we will start to see warmer nighttime temperatures and a little bit of warm rain to move the frost levels down. If everything falls into place we will be golfing in a couple of weeks. Time will tell.
Please reach out if you have any questions or would like further information on a topic. You can pay your 2025 fees online, at city hall, or in the clubhouse to get enrolled on our 2025 Virtual Membership Drive. Gift Certificate drawings will be held on April 19th. Enjoy the remainder of the weekend!
