The Muni Update
Aug 25, 2024
Good Morning,
This past week we hosted the Jasen Petersen Memorial golf outing and our golf leagues inched closer to the end of their season. There were 148 golfers for the JP Memorial event on Saturday. Tuesday we hosted the morning ladies league end of the year tournament. This morning we will be hosting the Wednesday and Thursday men's league end of year tournament. Next week we will be hosting Spencer High School, on Thursday, for their annual cross country meet. The course will need to be cleared by 3:00 PM.
The grounds crew has been busy working on daily maintenance practices as well as repairing some damaged areas around the greens. We cleaned out and sodded these areas on the perimeters of #6, #7, and #11 greens. The fresh sod helped alleviate some of the standing water which created muddy areas around the edges of these greens. We have a couple other areas we will be working on next week.
With all of the heavy rains and flooding that started early in the year and climaxed on June 22, we lost a lot of grass in the lower lying areas of the rough and fairways. These areas will start getting addressed in the upcoming weeks. We will be removing the bare areas, adding fill material, and finally adding new sod to help build up the low spots. Number ten fairway is one of the most damaged areas of the golf course. It will be a time consuming process that will take several weeks to complete. I will keep you updated on our progress.
Several of our putting surfaces have lost a little bit of turf due to isolated dry areas developing. We spent a lot of time hand watering and adding wetting agents to these areas as we worked through irrigation issues earlier in the year but still lost some turf in these areas. We will be using a sod cutter to remove the larger sections and adding new sod to these areas to alleviate the problem. This past week we did a lot of hand plugging on #16 green to repair the areas present. This coming week we will start to address the other few greens with issues.
Other than the damaged areas from flooding and small isolated dry spots on a few greens, the golf course is in great shape. The maintenance staff has been working very hard to provide a high quality golf course at an affordable price for our passholders and guests. The course condition definitely shows the level of dedication they have for our golf course.
Clubhouse staff has been doing an outstanding job yet again this season. Our teachers have all returned to school which leaves us a little short handed. I am very thankful to have all of these great employees return each season at the golf course. You will still see all of them working but their hours will be limited due to their full time jobs. The Muni is very fortunate to have staff that work inside and outside that display a personal pride in the operations of our golf course. The majority of them have worked here for many years.
Please reach out if you have any questions or would like additional information on a topic at the golf course. Enjoy the remainder of your weekend.
